An amazing school year came to an end for students at Beecher Road School in June. Packed with opportunities for new learning, both the students and the teachers came away from the 2008-09 academic year proud of what they had accomplished. To mention just a sample, student projects that use technology astonish all who see them in action. Achievement in both the visual and the performing arts finds Woodbridge students truly in a class by themselves as they astound adults with their sophisticated skills and talents. Reading and writing have been brought to new levels as programs shift from teacher-centered to student-centered models of instruction. Science instruction has taken a major leap into the 21st century with achievement results that make us proud. With a great appreciation the taxpayer, I am happy to state unequivocally that the Woodbridge School District is a beacon of the best practices in American education – a place where leaders of tomorrow are being nurtured today.

We expect many things in the 2009 – 2010 school year in the Woodbridge School District. We look forward to enhancing the quality and depth of our reading and writing programs. There will be a curriculum review in mathematics, grades K-6, as part of the Board of Education approved curriculum cycle. The use of technology will expand as a tool for accelerating learning. The Arts will continue to make learning come alive. A revised social studies curriculum will be implemented in grades K-4. Plans are being developed this year in the area of wellness in nutrition, physical activity, outdoor classroom, and policy review. In addition, we will continue to look for new ways to support the emotional and social development of children. Our teachers will fully implement Professional Learning Communities, an organizational structure that focuses even more precisely on student learning. We also expect to have solar panels installed on the roof of the Kindergarten wing as a first step in energy efficiency and efforts to go green. Likewise, it is anticipated that, through a Town appointed committee, proposals for a major school facilities upgrade will be brought to referendum.

Our Mission
To work together to prepare our children to pursue knowledge and learning throughout their lives so they can become responsible, caring and contributing members of an ever-changing and diverse global community. In the best interests of our children, we are committed to:
• Learning as a challenging process of choice, discovery, change and growth for all
• Inspiring the development and sharing of everyone’s unique gifts and talents
• Providing a learning community that nurtures and integrates social, emotional, physical and academic development.

Our Vision
To accomplish our mission, Beecher Road School must be a nurturing and stimulating community that values achievement, creativity, personal integrity and self-discipline. Here, each child will develop intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically and ethically in an environment that promotes self-awareness and respect.

Our Goals
1.
Prepare every child to be a highly successful and independent reader, writer, critical thinker and problem solver and build the foundations of character and wellness essential for responsible participation as a global citizen.

2. Improve internal and external communication to unite parents, educators, students and the community in working collaboratively to achieve our mission and goals for learning.

3. Implement a systematic process to ensure continuous improvement and proactive maintenance of the district’s buildings, grounds and capital assets.
